NPP Outdoor Group

The second NPPC Outdoor Group hike was on Memorial Day in good weather.  John Pittinger and Mike Harrington enjoyed an 8 mile hike on the Little Bottoms trail in the Abrams Creek gorge.  The 2011 tornado left a wide swath of this part of the gorge without many standing trees, although the many flora and fauna seen testify that the recovery is proceeding well.  No cameras made the trip so others will have to use their imaginations to visualize how lovely God's handiwork is in this part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The third NPPC Outdoor Group hike was on Saturday, June 15 on a lovely cool, clear day.  Ed and Caroline Best and Mike Harrington climbed to the top of CovePic of Hikers Mountain by the Laurel Falls trail of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It was fun watching a family of 3 bears in a tree below the falls and awe-inspiring to walk through the old growth forest above the falls. The snapshot (below) shows (from right) Ed Best, Caroline Best, and Mike Harrington at the trail junction sign near the peak. It was too late in the spring for most of the wildflowers to remain but Mountain Laurel, Flame Azalea and Fly Poison blooms were noticed.

July 13 - hike the middle prong trail - 7.8 miles round trip departing from church at 8:00 a.m. sign up is required. Contact Ed Best (ebestjr@gmail.com, 207-9229).
