Welcome Table

I’m going to eat at the welcome table
O yes, I’m going to eat at the welcome table, some of these days, hallelujah
I’m going to eat at the welcome table
I’m going to eat at the welcome table
I’m going to eat at the welcome table some of these days.
(lyrics from an African-American spiritual)

The Welcome Table is a ministry of New Providence Presbyterian Church that is open every Tuesday evening from 5-6 p.m. to offer a hot meal and a little celebration to everyone who comes in the door. The official mission statement of this ministry says that our purpose is to "provide a safe place for fellowship and a meal every week to all who come to our table”. That’s what we do, but why we do it comes from Hebrews 13:2, where it says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” (NRSV)

All who find themselves in the vicinity of New Providence on Tuesday evenings at five o'clock are welcome to stop in, whether they are on a tight financial budget or on a tight time schedule, in need of a prepared meal, a smile, an encouraging word, sincere fellowship, or just need a place to be with friends. Attendance is a mixture of families, couples, single people, young, old, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, retired, working, going to school—all enjoying themselves, all angels even if they are not aware of it, all welcome.

If you are seeking information about the Welcome Table, please contact the coordinator, Amelia Geis (e-mail, 983-0182).
