From the Missions Committee – Fall Food In-Gathering
West Chelmsford is having its fall food in-gathering for the Open Pantry of Greater Lowell on Sunday, September 29, 2019. The Pantry provides short-term food assistance to those in need who reside in the Greater Lowell area. The reasons for need are numerous, but for many persons it is a choice between food, heat or medications.
Over 1,500 people are served each month. More than 1/3 of those we help are children. Assistance is offered to individuals and families without any discrimination based on race, creed, or country of origin.
The Open Pantry is always in need of non-perishables which could be considered a nutritious part of a meal. These include: Canned vegetables, canned fruits, fruit juices, canned beef, turkey or chicken, canned soups and stews, tuna, pasta, cereals, powdered milk, macaroni & cheese, rice, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, and beans. In addition, they distribute toiletries including: soap, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, toothpaste, and shampoo. At times, they may also provide diapers, wipes, baby formula, baby food, and cat/dog food when available.
They appreciate any of these items and also monetary donations. Please, if you choose to give a monetary donation, write the check to WCUMC with a notation that it is for the Open Pantry.

Hunger and homelessness happen for a number of reasons – job loss, illness, disability, trauma, and poor choices, to name a few. Whatever the cause, the LTLC provides meals, emergency shelter, and transitional and supportive housing to those who are hungry, homeless, or who need support to remain in their homes.
For so many who have lost hope, the LTLC people and programs help restore dignity and self-respect. With the help of our case managers, individuals take important steps toward self-sufficiency by confronting the reasons they are homeless, and then work to make the changes necessary to find housing and live independently.
The West Chelmsford Methodist Church has been helping by sponsoring an annual in gathering as well as giving monetary donations.
